Did you know that marine phytoplankton are estimated to produce at least 50% of the oxygen on Earth? 🦠 But recent research reveals the extent at which photic zones (the uppermost layer of oceanic ecosystems where sunlight can still penetrate below the surface) are darkening and therefore becoming less viable for the survival of phytoplankton and entire marine food webs.
This study from the University of Plymouth, published on May 27, 2025, attributes ocean darkening over the past two decades to a number of factors, including increased coastal runoff, changes in ocean circulation, shifts in the characteristics of phytoplankton species, and warming ocean temperatures.
Ocean darkening has significant implications for human society, impacting food security, oxygen production, and climate regulation. The ocean’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide and regulate the planet’s climate is also affected by changes in marine ecosystems.
THIS is why research is so important. By studying these changes, scientists can better understand how our actions, like pollution and climate change, are affecting the ocean and how we can mitigate and adapt to ocean-climate impacts accordingly. 🌎
